What does it cost?
It depends on the scope. A diagnostic is a fixed, bounded piece of work with a fixed price. Longer engagements are priced on the days they actually need, not on a headcount you don't have. I'll give you a straight number after the first call, not a range designed to get you on one.
How long does an engagement run?
A diagnostic usually wraps in two to three weeks. Strategy and go-to-market work runs longer, because it involves your team rather than just me. Interim leadership is the exception — that runs as long as the gap does. I'll tell you which one you need before you commit to any of them.
Do you work on retainer?
Some clients keep me on for ongoing advisory input once the main piece of work is done — a standing session, a sounding board, a second opinion before a big call. It's not the default, and I won't push you toward one. A retainer should exist because you still need something, not because the engagement never properly ended.
Whether I'm the right fit
What size businesses do you work with?
Mostly $20–100M revenue. Big enough to have real customers, real revenue and real complexity. Small enough that marketing is still one or two people carrying everything. That's the range where a fractional CMO changes the most, because the gap between what the business needs and what the team can staff is at its widest.
Which industries do you know?
Technology, healthcare, transport and logistics, government, telco and not-for-profit. Twenty years across those sectors means long sales cycles, regulated categories and multi-stakeholder buying are familiar ground. What carries between them is the thinking, not the playbook — I won't hand you someone else's.
Do you replace my agency?
No. I'm not here to replace your agency — I'm here to give them a brief worth executing. Most agency relationships underperform because nobody on the client side is setting the strategy, defining the audience or holding the work to a standard. That's the job I do. Agencies usually get better once it's in place.
Getting started
Do I get a marketing plan at the end?
You get more than a plan. I'll build the strategy and the reasoning behind it, so your team can make the next hundred decisions without me in the room. A plan nobody can defend is a document. A plan your team understands is a capability.
How do we start?
Book a call. Thirty minutes, no deck, no pitch. You tell me what isn't working and I'll tell you whether I can help. If it's obvious I'm not the right person, I'll say so on that call and point you at who is.
If your question isn't here.
Ask it. I read these myself and reply within a day. If it's obvious from your message that I'm not the right person, I'll tell you that too — and usually point you at who is.
Your details go into my CRM so I can reply, and nowhere else. I don't sell data or add people to lists they didn't ask for. The privacy policy has the detail.
